The Emergence of Your Grandfather’s Closet

Res Publica Politics

Alright, I know you’ve seen the styled sweater vests and chunky loafers. Granddad-esque outfits have slowly crept up on us over the last years, but have not fully flooded our mainstream media like average trends, so what’s going on?

I personally call this style, ‘the emergence of your grandad’s closet.’ You know, behind the box of magazines he insists on keeping because of ‘sentimental value.’

The grandad chic that I have slowly grown to obsess over is the formation of what all our grandpas essentially represent. Staying timeless and classic, but refusing to take a step out of the house if he’s not completely and utterly enthralled in comfort. We take that and we elevate it to a contemporary standard.

The style plays with the ideas of shape and silhouettes that rebel from what the mainstream sees as flattering. It takes a choice of heavy materials, and slouchy textures to compliment your body. Though it's keen of shapelessness, it doesn’t mean you can just throw a baggy sweatshirt on and call it a day, there's a sense of class to the extra space you provide. The space is custom to just fit your body, which makes tailoring a key component for this style. From the edges of your trousers to the sleeve lengths on your blazer, each detail must be obsessively clean.

It produces a slouchy profile, providing the comfort of sweatpants, yet still achieving the clean demeanor of a wall street model. When carefully looked at, this grandpa style could even join the ranks of our traditional old school fashion, possibly even seen as a newer, elevated version.

It’s like old-school fashion took a vacation to the Bahamas.
